Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Gerhard “Larry” Lange was born in Hamburg, Germany, to Alma (Timm) and Kurt Lange. As he told it, his only memory of the war was working on his knees in the potato fields. Afterwards, his mother was determined to take her growing family away from Germany. In 1955, she was successful, and Gerhard, his mother and stepfather, and five of his siblings immigrated to Canada.
Larry married his first wife, Janet, in Edmonton, Canada, and they moved to the United States, to live in Santa Barbara, California. Unfortunately, the marriage did not last, but Larry stayed in the U.S. and became a citizen. Eventually, he bought a semi-truck and a small “farm” in Blaine, Washington. Every week, he hauled paper products from the Vancouver, BC, area to southern California, then returned north with produce. In 1975, Larry stopped at a truck stop in Canyonville, Oregon. After dinner, on a whim, he headed into the bar. “Why not?” he thought. It was a good decision, as he happened to meet the woman who would become the love of his life.
Frances (“Scotty”) Scott and Gerhard (“Larry”) Lange were married in June 1979. Their days in Blaine were full. Larry loved to talk, meet people, and “wheel and deal.” They kept a couple pigs and a small flock of chickens. Ducks and geese swam in the creek that went through their property. Larry made extensive additions to their house, they co-owned a pleasure boat, and twice they travelled to Germany to visit his family that remained there. In the early 1990s, after Larry retired, they moved to Cascade Locks, Oregon, to live in the “bosom” of Scotty’s family. After fixing up their house, Larry spent his time at the fishing hole and being out and about in the neighborhood.
Larry lost the love of his life in 2011. For many years he did his best, though he had never prepared himself for life without Scotty. He made new friends, went to the casinos, and continued to dream big for the lottery that he played faithfully. His many health issues caught up with him in early 2025 and he passed on Feb. 22.
Larry was proceeded in death by his wife, his stepdaughter, Rachel Beer, and his brothers, Kurt and Arnold. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Lange, stepdaughter, Colette Kimball, and siblings Ewald, Margot, Lydia, and Peter.
