John C. Wood of The Dalles, Oregon, passed away at the age of 92 on Easter morning, April 20, 2025.
John, who also went by Jack, was born on May 8, 1932, to Flora and Mac Wood in The Dalles. He was the second of two boys, with his brother Norm being seven years older. John graduated from The Dalles High School in 1952 and enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard for a stint up in Anchorage, Alaska.
After returning from Alaska, John married Carole Wedekind in The Dalles, and they raised two boys, Jeff and Scott. He went to work for the Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company, following in his brother’s footsteps as an installer and repairman. His career lasted 30 years, with the last years of his career being with United Telephone. His territory covered telephone lines in Wasco, Sherman, and Gilliam counties.
John was an avid hunter and fisherman, and as a young man fished commercially at Celilo Falls. He and his brother Norm raised their families to put venison on the table and salmon and steelhead in the freezer. They hunted the Muddy Ranch for many years before the ranch was sold to the Rajneesh.
John married Carole in 1955 until she passed in 1986 from cancer. He would get remarried to Dona Fulton in 1987. That marriage lasted until Dona’s passing in 2017. Not one for living alone, he met Lois Rose at The Dalles Senior Center, and they lived together until her passing in 2024. He then moved in with his younger son, Scott, who lives outside of Estacada, Oregon, for the last several months of his life.
John is survived by his sons, Jeff and Scott Wood; grandson Andrew; granddaughters Sara, Kim, and Jessica; and five great-grandchildren.
A private family interment will be taking place to celebrate John’s life. Cards and memories can be sent to Scott Wood at 21207 South Springwater Road, Estacada, OR, 97023.
