John Shearer

John William Shearer, of The Dalles, Oregon, peacefully passed away on Nov. 9, 2024, at the age of 98. He was born May 5, 1926, in The Dalles, Oregon, to Marcus and Matilda (Davis) Shearer.

John grew up in Maupin, Oregon, where he attended school and helped at his family’s hotel and restaurant. After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force during World War II. During his service, he studied flight engineering, worked on a B17 engine change crew, trained as a drill instructor, and was accepted into a liaison pilot training program.

I think I met this man at Home Depot not many years ago. I commented on his Veteran's hat, you know the ball cap style kind that read Korean or Vietnam Veteran, or the name of the ship that they were on. I mentioned that there were not many WW2 vets still around and we better get busy listening to their stories before they are gone. I know now I wished I had had the prescience to have asked those questions of my parents, both WW2 combat vets. Sorry now that I never followed up
