John "Jack" Jakobsen, born in Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully in August 2024. Jack, a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa, was known for his passion for photography, vintage cars, and motorcycles. He was 88 years old.
Jack grew up in Omaha, Nebraska and pursued higher education at the University of Omaha and earned his BS in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska. He was active in ROTC and served honorably as a Marine.
Jack's professional path and included finance, real estate, law enforcement, and business management. After retiring in 1995 as the assistant director of general services for Santa Cruz County, Jack moved to Hood River, Oregon, to spend time on his hobbies and passions. He was active in the Hood River Art Gallery. He was a member of the Austin Healey Club of Oregon and he restored a 1959 Austin Healey.
He moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2002.
Jack was a problem solver, with the mind of an engineer, the wisdom of a caring mentor, and the eye of an artist. Jack loved jazz and classical music and published a book of his photographs of the Portland Japanese Garden. He was a lifelong student, constantly taking computer and photography classes.
Jack is survived by his wife, Sheila Miles Jakobsen. He was predeceased by his late wife, Shirley Ann Jakobsen. He is also survived by five children, numerous grandchildren, and many friends and family members.
Remembrance donations may be made to the Portland Japanese Garden or Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon.
A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
