John Hutchison, 83, passed away on Dec. 26, 2011, at the Oregon Veterans Home at The Dalles, Ore.
John was born June 28, 1928, in Denver, Colo., to Cecil Teller and Evelyn Esther (Scharf) Hutchison. He moved to the Hood River Valley in 1935, attending school in Pine Grove and Parkdale.
During World War II John served our country proudly in the U.S. Army. Military rites to commemorate his service to our country will be performed on Saturday, Dec. 31 (details below).
On Feb. 15, 1947, he married Phyllis Beatrice Lavoie and to their union were blessed four children: Esther, Dave, Rick and Cecil.
John worked for the Dee hardboard mill, from which he retired; but afterhours he and his father operated a mechanic shop at his father's Pine Grove house, after working a full day at the mill. The kids remember working in and with their dad in the shop and learned the values he taught.
John was a trusting, genuine good man who did his business on a handshake.
He is survived by his three children and their spouses: Esther Korhonen of Dee, Ore., Dave and Cheryl Hutchison of Yakima, Wash., and Rick and Verna Hutchison of Mosier, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other distant family and many friends that he had collected over the years.
In addition to his parents and wife in 2002, he was preceded in death by his son Cecil in 2005.
Services are planned for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, at Anderson's Tribute Center. Graveside rites will follow at Pine Grove Butte Cemetery. Following the graveside everyone is invited to join family at the Pine Grove Grange for a time of fellowship and food.
Memorials can be made in memory of John to FISH food bank in Hood River.
