James W. (Jim) Dennis, 72, of Dufur, Ore., passed away Nov. 30, 2023, at Adventist Hospital in Portland, Ore., after a brief illness. Jim was born to James Oliver (Pete) and Pearl (Moore) Dennis in Roseburg, Ore., on Nov. 20, 1951.
He was a cancer survivor, living 18 years with Multiple Myeloma, when his original prognosis was for a life expectancy of 18-30 months. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Julie (Patterson) Dennis and three daughters and their families, Jennifer and Justin Sibbring and children Avery and Allison of Patterson, Calif.; Jenelle and Jeremy McCleary and children Layla, Carter and Elliot of Bend, Ore.; Jaclyn and Bill Stewart of Yacolt, Wash. He is also survived by a brother, Jeff Dennis, of Portland, nephew Ryan and a cousin, Chris Waugh. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Jane Dennis, and several cousins.
Jim graduated from Wahtonka High School in 1969. He was later drafted out of college into the U.S. Army, serving from 1971-1974. He was Honorably Discharged. Jim had retired in 2011 from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, where he served as team lead for the Environmental and Safety Groups for The Dalles, John Day and Willow Creek Dams. Prior to working for the Corps. of Engineers, he worked 24 years at the Goldendale /Columbia Aluminum Plant in nearly all departments, lastly serving as the environmental compliance specialist, until it closed in February 2001, and going to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in October 2001.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 3 in the Dufur School Gymnasium. A light repast will be served in the cafeteria immediately following the memorial.
