Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Doris Jensen passed peacefully Nov. 17, 2023, surrounded by her son Mike his wife Sheila, and their two sons, Alex and Nick. She was born in Grand Rapids, Minn., May 19, 1930, in a different time and place. She was the third youngest born in an old farmhouse and the only running water was the children running down to the well in 20 below zero weather in winter — not to mention the outhouse.
Her family moved to Grand Rapids, where she met the boy next door, Percy. Percy left for work at 15 years old but returned five years later and met Doris, who was not just a little girl next door but a beautiful young woman. They were married in 1950 and welcomed their son Mike in 1957.
They tired of the cold in Minnesota and moved to Hood River, Ore., in February of 1958, but Doris had a little surprise in her tummy. Cathy was born July of 1958 and the family adventure began.
Doris was a great homemaker until the kids went to school, when she joined the workforce. She was very involved in the community starting with the Jayceetes, the Oregon Fair Association, then Hood River County Fair and the Soroptomists. Her church Valley Christian was very important to her and my dad.
What a cook she was — everyone looked forward to what desert she would dream up, from chocolate decadence cake, cheesecakes and the many pies for Thanksgiving, and then she would bake up the monster cookies for the grandchildren. Her motto was eat dessert first.
But the garden was her favorite place — her garden and the flowers. She had her roses and various beds around the house. She always had to go out and get her flowers for the beds ready in the springtime.
Doris was the last remaining of both her and Percy’s direct families. She is survived by her son Dr. Mike Jensen, his wife Sheila, and their two sons, Alexander (Jenny) and Nicholas; her daughter, Cathy Bissonette and her two sons, Austin (Ashly) and Justin (Jodi); and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at noon on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Valley Christian Church, 975 Indian Creek Road, Hood River, with interment to follow at Idlewilde Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River. Visit www.AndersonsTributeCenter.com to leave a note of condolence for the family.

Sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom and my Aunt Doris. I'm Selma's 3rd son Rich. My heart and soul reaches out to y'all. i don't think we've ever met in person tho. I hadn't seen her since 69. Sounds like she was a great person who loved the outdoors like all her siblings. I know she traveled thru my town in her travels but i wish she would have touched me when she passed thru here. i noticed that her passing was the day after my wife Jeanne death anniversary and two days after my Mom Selma. I'm having hard time living with the grieving of my wife so i can relate to the path your on now. i currently live in NM but moving back to MN come spring. Maybe we can hook up sometime. May Gods love help you find the courage to carry on. love Rich
