Doris Ruth (Hill) Fowler passed away at the age of 96 on April 7, 2023, at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, Ore. Her son, daughter and grandson Erik Fowler were with her in her final days.
She was born on Sept. 30, 1926, and raised in Bay City, Texas. During her time there, she excelled in playing the saxophone. Upon graduation from high school, she attended the University of Texas School of Nursing, earning her LPN degree. There, she met and married Ralph Fowler, They moved to Freeport, Texas and began a family with three children. Doris worked in nursing at Freeport Memorial Hospital. Then the family moved to Anchorage, Alaska, in 1958. She was employed as a nurse at Providence Hospital, Elmendorf AFB, and in the East Anchorage High School nurses office. She earned a second retirement as a postal worker with the United States Post Office. She also volunteered as an aid for the Anchorage School District.
A favorite pastime of hers was knitting Alaskan sweaters. She was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron twice for OES No. 8 and served as a Mother Advisor for Nugget Assembly No. 13. In 2001, Doris moved to Rufus, Ore., to live near her son. In 2011, she moved to Sherman County Senior center in Moro, Ore., to live near a good friend. She moved to Rufus again in 2022, where she lived the last nine months until her passing.
She is survived by her son, Ralph D. Fowler; her daughter, Rebecca Boyd; and four grandchildren and six-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Glenda (Fowler) Bottger.
She belonged to the Pioneers of Alaska. Burial will be a Anchorage Memorial Park Columbarium Wall.
