The family of David Earl Warnock mourns his passing from this world. Born June 5, 1957, at the Navajo Brethren in Christ Mission Hospital near Bloomfield, N.M., he died Dec. 30, 2023, of cardiac arrest at work in The Dalles, Ore., at the age of 66. Above all else, friends and family say that David will be remembered most for his kind heart and gentle spirit.
A gifted photographer, his legacy is a huge body of photographic work through which he captured the beauty of the earth as experienced in the tiny details as well as in beautiful sweeping landscapes. He honed his printing skills at PhotoCraft in Portland, Ore., one of the largest photo finishing labs for professional photographers on the West Coast. His portraits of Portlandia-Portland’s downtown architecture are stunning and thought-provoking.
In addition to his beautiful prints, his last year was spent exploring adding his photos to calendars, mugs, candles, tiles, and t-shirts for craft fairs. He tested the market with "Dave’s Photocrafts," his booth at The Dalles Farmers Market. He also very much enjoyed working at The Springs Assisted Living Facility in The Dalles, facilitating weekend enrichment activities. David was a collector of knowledge on any and every subject in which he found himself interested. He had an enormous library of books, movies, and music and submitted many Letters to the Editor on various topics over the years.
After being born near Chaco Canyon National Monument, David grew up in The National Park Service, moving with his family around the country. Other parks where they lived included Yosemite National Park, Calif., Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia (though the home was in Cherry Hill, N.J.), and The Southwest Regional Office in Santa Fe, N.M. After graduating with a degree in English Literature from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, David also lived in Seattle, Wash., Portland, and Crescent City, Calif., near to Redwood National Park to assist his parents in their elder years. With his folks, he moved up to Hood River, Ore., in 2010.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son Daniel and his father Douglas Warnock. David’s family include his mother, Thelma Warnock; three sisters, Karen Harding (Keith), Kathy Semmes (Todd), and Kristen Warnock of Hood River; and a brother, Darell Warnock (Ann) of Big Mountain, Calif. Nieces and nephews include Keeley Harding of Hood River, Kory Harding (Nina) of Bothell, Wash., Brenna Hohmann (Paul) of Louisville, Ky., Kaya Diem (Patrick) of Seaside, Ore., Tia Semmes (Lukas) of Morro Bay, Calif., and Leo Hughes of St Paul, Minn., and Daniel’s wife, Kelley Warnock, Albuquerque, N.M.
We very much appreciate the support of the Hood River community as we have moved through the grieving process, especially Riverside Community Church, where David was a member, and his photographs adorn the walls.
All are invited to a farewell fathering for David Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. at Riverside Community Church in Hood River.
