Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
David J Bullock lived an adventurous 85 years of life. He was born March 16, 1940, in Long Beach, California, and died at home in The Dalles, Oregon, on July 27, 2025. He was the first of three sons born to Joseph and Jean Bullock. He was raised in Portland, Oregon, and, later, Piedmont, California.
He married Gloria Encalada in 1959 and together they had a son, Treothe, and a daughter, Laura. They moved to Portland from the Bay Area in California to raise their family. They later divorced and, in 1987, David married his current wife, Joella.
David worked for many years as a printer before changing careers to become an alcohol and drug counselor. In 1995, he and Joella moved to The Dalles from Portland and both worked for Mid-Columbia Center for Living.
David and Joella traveled to many countries, including several trips to different locations in Mexico. They enjoyed hiking year around with their dogs. David loved to find remote trails.
He had many interests, including photography, gardening, reading, music, woodworking, collecting art, creating art, dogs, and riding his motorcycle. A motorcycle accident in 2021 left him permanently disabled and unable to enjoy life to the fullest. He continued to find joy with his wife, his family, his dogs and prolific reading.
He is survived by his wife, Joella; son Treothe (Olive); daughter Laura (Pat); stepson Phillip (Marlon); grandchildren Aloicious, River (Sarah), and Gaia (Joe); great-grandchildren Lucy, Maddie and Jack; his two younger brothers; and his nephews.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and great uncle. His family will miss him every day.
A celebration of life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 101 W 10th, The Dalles, on Aug. 16 at 4 p.m.
In lieu flowers, family suggests a donation to your favorite charity or to the Zion elevator fund. A special thanks to Providence Hospice, who helped his family through his final three weeks.
