Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Charles Medill Sheppard Jr. was born in The Dalles, Oregon, on Oct. 8, 1940, and was raised just outside Hood River, Oregon, on a small farm. He graduated from the old Hood River High School in 1958 and attended college briefly. He met and married his lifelong partner, Joann Rae Weygandt, in 1963 and farmed for a short time with his father and brother in Hood River.
Chuck worked in auto parts, log hauling/dump trucking, operated a salvage pool and then managed heavy truck repair and parts sales. He officially retired in 2014 and worked in his beloved shop in West Richland, Washington, restoring trucks until his health declined. In 2021, with the help of the entire family, he and Joann moved to Springfield, Oregon, to be near family. On Feb. 25, 2025, he lost a long and courageous battle with a number of major health issues and passed peacefully. The entire family was able to say goodbye.
Chuck was a leader and was well respected by many he worked with, and helped with his vast mechanical knowledge and experience. He had a quiet self-confidence that drew people to him. From childhood to the end, he was always rebuilding some old castoff piece of equipment. It was the essence of his soul.Â
Chuck is survived by his wife, Joann; daughter Christine (Steve Sr.) Blatchley; grandsons Steve Jr. (Ashley), and Beauman (Susan); son, Charles (Cecilia); one brother, John; and grandchildren Trevor, Kira (Brayden) Loewen, and Logan; as well as five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
