James Carl Carter, 85, passed away Jan. 25, 2012, at Providence Medical Center of Portland, Ore. Carl was born April 20, 1926, in McLean, Texas, to James McKnight and Cora (Pugh) Carter.
He moved to Hood River, Ore., in May 1941 from Big Heart, Okla. He married Maxine Swyers on Nov. 24, 1942, in Stevenson, Wash. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving Day, 2011, with 50 family and friends.
Carl worked in the shipyards until he entered the military in August 1944, serving until 1946; he was in the European Theater. After the war he came home to Hood River and started his working career.
Carl has worked a variety of jobs, ranging from pulling lumber on the chain to a welder, mechanic and construction, before he and his brother Cecil started logging in 1955. Several years later Carl bought out his brother's interest in J.C. Logging Co. and his son Dennis joined the company.
He retired in the 1990s and he and Maxine spent several winters in Arizona, panning for gold and finding and exploring abandoned mines. They also traveled to Alaska and did fishing trips on the Snake River and the Powder River.
Carl liked to work with wood and always doing various project. He enjoyed sharing life with his family and friends, by whom he was greatly loved.

Carl is survived by his wife, Maxine (Swyers) Carter; three daughters: Susan Schreiter and her husband, Larry, of Lake Oswego, Ore., Kay Sheirbon and her husband, Joe, of Hood River, and Janice Carter, of Hood River; and son, Dennis Carter, of Hood River; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Cecil Carter; and sister Joy O'Brien.
He was preceded in death by a baby daughter, Wendy, brother Con Carter, sister Jewel Davidson and grandson Larry Schreiter Jr.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Anderson's Tribute Center. Military rites will be offered by the Oregon Honors Team and celebrant speaker Bob Huskey will officiate.
Memorials can be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Carl.
