Robert Allyn Krieger was born in Hood River, Ore., on March 16, 1923, to parents George and Ruth (Nicholson) Krieger. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1941 and later took a two-year post for the U.S. Army in a Korean shipyard.
Bob started as a wiper and worked up to chief engineer with the Merchant Marines. He sailed from Australia to Juneau, Alaska, up and down the coasts of Central America, in and out of the ports of Japan to and from the northern ports of South America. After 32 years of service with the Merchant Marines, he retired.
Bob met the love of his life, Yoshiko Yamamoto, in 1954 and they married Nov. 2, 1962, in Tokyo. After retirement, Bob and Yoshiko settled in the Snowden area of White Salmon, Wash. They enjoyed the milder seasons in White Salmon but preferred to winter in Hawaii, living there from October until April, a lifestyle that fit them quite well.
Bob's interests included photography, music of all kinds, traveling and reading. One of his favorite poems was "Black Marigolds," by English poet Powys Mathers.
Bob nurtured long-term friendships. He was a wonderful storyteller with a wicked sense of humor and loved a good joke, both receiving and delivery of.
Bob was a romantic and often found the beauty within. He lived his life by example and was one of the most generous, loving and accepting people many had the privilege of knowing.
He passed away in Hilo, Hawaii, on March 11, 2011, at the age of 87.
He is survived by numerous cousins and friends. His wife of nearly 43 years, Yoshiko, preceded him in death in 2005.
A memorial reception will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon. In lieu of flowers, Bob requested that donations be given to Hospice of the Gorge, 1630 Woods Court, Hood River, OR 97031. Please sign the online guestbook at www.columbiagorgefunerals.com.
