Robert Allyn Krieger was born in Hood River, Ore., on March 16, 1923, to parents George and Ruth (Nicholson) Krieger. He graduated from The Dalles High School in 1941 and later took a two-year post for the U.S. Army in a Korean shipyard.

Bob started as a wiper and worked up to chief engineer with the Merchant Marines. He sailed from Australia to Juneau, Alaska, up and down the coasts of Central America, in and out of the ports of Japan to and from the northern ports of South America. After 32 years of service with the Merchant Marines, he retired.
