Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
In loving memory of WT "Bill" Nelson, who peacefully passed away at his home in Roseburg, Ore., on Oct. 20, 2023. He was born on March 19, 1937, in Beaverdam, Ky., to parents Elvis and Eva Nelson.
WT proudly served in the US Navy, traveling with the Blue Angels, before retiring after 21 years of service. In 1975, WT and his family relocated to Hood River, Ore.
He is survived by daughters, Lisa M. Nelson (and husband, Bill) and Suzy Van Horn (and husband, Jeffrey); son, William “Bill” T. Nelson; and grandchildren, Brittany, Andrew, Ash-lyn, Philip, Jordan, Megan, Chance, and Ella.
Following his retirement from the Navy, WT started a career as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau Insurance, later to become Country Companies. When he retired from insurance, he soon pursued his childhood passion, candymaking. He opened Hood River Candy Company, expanding to The Dalles, Ore., and even gaining recognition in Modern Bride Magazine for his chocolate heart jewelry box. In his late 70s, WT "Water Tight" Nelson had one more adventure to complete. He wrote an autobiography, "From Bare Feet to the Jump Seat."
WT and his family were dedicated members of Odell Baptist Church, finding comfort and support in their extended church family. WT had a deep passion for sharing the gospel and serving the Lord throughout his life. Now, he is peacefully enjoying the Kingdom of Heaven and the joyous reunion with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A memorial service will be held at Roseburg National Cemetery on Nov. 13 at 1p.m., followed by his celebration of life at Westside Christian Church, Roseburg. We look forward to seeing you there, as we gather to celebrate the adventurous life of WT Nelson. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
