Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
On Saturday April 19, 2025, “Sandy” Alexander William Macnab of Dufur, Oregon, passed away.
Born July 12, 1953, to Thomas and Helen Macnab of Wasco, Oregon, the third of eight siblings, Sandy attended Sherman County Union High School, where he graduated valedictorian. After graduating, he moved to Corvallis, where he attended Oregon State University and graduated with a Bachelor’s in agricultural science. He later returned to his alma mater to earn his Masters in agricultural education.
Sandy later worked as the Oregon State University Agricultural extension agent for wheat for both Sherman and Wasco counties at various points in his career. As an extension agent, he never missed a chance to attend the National Extension Agents Convention and was given several awards for his work in this field.
During this time, he established himself as a prominent member of the local agricultural community, serving as a member of several industry related boards, including the Soil and Water Conservation District, Oregon Wheat Growers League, Cattlemen’s Association, Sherman Development Fund and Sherman County Fair Board. He also wrote a weekly column entitled “Off the Farm” for well over a decade for The Dalles Reminder, where his sense of humor, inspired by Mark Twain and what we now call Dad Jokes, always shined through and brought him many compliments.
He helped to organize several local events, including tours for visiting groups from out of town, his Annual Bull Tour, the Cherry Festival, where he served as grand marshal in 2014, and both Wasco and Sherman county fairs, the latter of which he served as grand marshal in 2014. He served as the unofficial official photographer for nearly every event he attended and was never far from his camera.
Sandy was also very involved with the local Catholic churches, serving on the board for both Dufur’s St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and Wasco’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he often served as a lay minister in the absence of a priest.
He loved his family and his community and always enjoyed going for “Deer Runs” to drive around the area he called home any time he had visitors.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Anne Macnab, and he is survived by his children, Jennifer Macnab Brost and son-in-law Drew Brost, Scott Macnab, and David Macnab; and grandchildren Anna Brost and Avery Brost.
Sandy’s loss will be felt by many.
Services to be held Friday, May 30 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in The Dalles, Oregon. A rosary will be held starting at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 11 a.m., and memorial reception at noon at the adjacent parish hall.
