Norman Wayne Bright unexpectantly passed away Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, at the age of 72. He was born May 2, 1947, in Yakima, to William Dewey and Ethel Bessey Palin Bright.
Norman was raised by his mother in Yakima, Seattle, and Port Angeles. He attended Port Angeles High School.
At the age of 17, Norm joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a sheet metal worker and was primarily stationed at Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines. He was awarded the National Defense Service Metal.
After the military Norm worked for a short time at Boeing, then returned to Port Angeles to attend Peninsula College.
In 1976 he married Delores Donley.
He enjoyed a decade as a pilot and dispatcher for San Juan Airlines. Later he drove trucks for Ray Erdman Trucking. In 1992, he went to work for the Department of Corrections where he rose from corrections officer, to sergeant, and to classification counselor until his retirement in 2013.
Norman was very active in serving his community. Freemasonry was a huge part of his later life. He belonged to Lodges in Forks, Quilcene, and White Salmon. He also enjoyed serving as a Pacific Crest Trail “Angel” transporting hikers to and from the trail.
He was a good handyman and enjoyed car mechanics.
In 2003, he married Virginia Smith Yancey, and after retirement they moved to Trout Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Bill, Jim, Viola, and Dewey.
He is survived by children Michael (Jennifer) Mantle of Sequim, Jennifer (Bob) Nelson of Priest River, Idaho, and Steven Bright of Husum, stepchildren Jacob (April) Yancey of Tumwater, Ann Yancey (Mitchel Ashley) of Olympia, and Alice Yancey of Olympia. He has nine grandchildren: Azariah, Danielle, Haley, Virginia Faye, William, Kaidence, Cloey, Tucker and Ravenlily.
Services with Masonic and Military honors will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, at the White Salmon Masonic Lodge.
