Mike was born on Jan. 7, 1951, in Hood River, Ore., to Raymond and Bonnie Calmettes. He was the longest baby born at Hood River Memorial Hospital, a fact that he took pride in telling people even in the weeks leading up to his death.
He could be seen all over the Hood River Valley delivering flowers for his family business, Heights Greenhouse.
He served in the National Guard from 1970-1976. He was a very active member of the American Legion in Hood River for many years.
He spent 25 years working for United Grocers/Cash-n-Carry. After moving back to Oregon in 2011, he worked for a short time at Myrtle Creek Golf Course before spending time working in Texas checking for corrosion on oil pipelines.
He made many true friends in his life and cherished them all. He was a true friend to all. He was generous to a fault, but never regretted his decisions to help anyone.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Molly.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Ellen and his sons Gary and Korey, his two brothers, Tim and Dave, two grandchildren and many extended friends and family.
Mike requested to be cremated after donating his brain to glioblastoma research. A celebration of life is being planned for June 30 at 3 p.m. at Cougar Canyon Golf course in Myrtlecreek, Ore. There will be a second celebration of life for Mike, place, date and time to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Dr. Neuwelt/Blood Brain Barrier Program Oregon Health & Science University Foundation, 1121 S.W. Salmon St., Suite 100, Portland, OR 97205-2021 (in memory of Michael Ray Calmettes).
