Mary Ann Pool died Dec. 24, 2009. She was born Aug. 6, 1937, in Steubenville, Ohio, to Leroy and Isabel McClave. She shared an enduring, lifelong bond with her sister Karen, after whom she named her own daughter.
As an active child Mary Ann was considered a “tomboy” for her time. She grew into a beautiful woman who was deeply loved by her family and friends.
Mary Ann married her high school sweetheart, Billy Pool, whom she had met after her family moved to Florida. They raised four children: Mike, Bob, Karen and David. Together Bill and Mary Ann made homes and remodeled houses in Florida, New Jersey, Illinois, France, New York, Wyoming, California and finally in Hood River, Ore.
Mary Ann laughed often, never cried over spilt wine, and encouraged her loved ones to live their lives fully without excuses or regrets. She was an energetic woman who loved to stay busy.
A natural athlete who loved the outdoors, Mary Ann was an accomplished telemark skier, tennis player, hiker and swimmer, and she walked faster than everyone else; even into her 70s. She had a great love of nature, collected wild mushrooms and she loved to garden. She exercised her mind with jigsaw puzzles and crosswords, and she had an incredible, unquenchable appetite for reading books.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Bill, whom she loved most dearly for more than 55 years. It is a great comfort to her children that she and their father had the chance to travel the globe together during the last couple of decades of her life.
Mary Ann was a loving and inspiring grandmother to her six grandchildren: Brittany, Jamie, Andy, Brian, Leanne and Anika. She was a dearly loved mother-in-law to Dan, Julie and Marilyn.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday Dec. 30, at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Mary Ann’s ashes will be scattered by her family in the beautiful mountains of Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Charitable contributions can be sent in Mary Ann’s name to the Hospice of the Gorge or Compassion and Choices of Oregon and sent care of Anderson’s Tribute Center.
