Martha Ellen Brewer passed away Jan. 7, 2014, at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland, Ore. Martha was born Sept. 15, 1948, in Belvue, Kansas, to Ray and Montie (Dillon) Vanderslice. Her family moved to Oregon when she was a young girl, then they moved to Washington; she attended school both in Oregon and Washington.
Services are planned for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River. Viewing is planned from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, at Anderson’s.
Martha married Doyle Gilbert and they had one son; after that marriage ended, she married Richard (Dick) Dowty. They had three children, two daughters and one son. After that marriage ended, she married Wayne Brewer.
Martha worked as a bartender and as a caregiver in nursing homes. She enjoyed crocheting, writing poems and listening to Elvis Presley music.
She is survived by her four children: Franklin Ray Gilbert, of Portland, Tambitha Dowty, of Portland, Hope Dowty, of Hood River, and Terry Dowty, of Goldendale, Wash.; five sisters: Bessie Jarrell, of Washougal, Wash., Eva Dooms, of Ethel, Wash., Gertie Baxter, of Carson, Wash., Gloria Vanderslice, of Stevenson, Wash., and Beverly Baugh, of Bothell, Wash.; two brothers: Roy Vanderslice, of Ridgefield, Wash., and John Vanderslice, of Battle Ground, Wash.; grandchildren Tia Whitecotton, Brandon R. Abell, Bryan Dowty, Terry Dowty Jr. and eight others; one great-grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Ray Vanderslice Jr.
Memorial contributions may be made to Anderson’s Tribute Center for funeral expenses.
