Marjorie (Mears) Wells, 86, passed away Oct. 2, 2009, at the Oregon Veterans’ Home in The Dalles, Ore. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who spent her life in service to her family, church and community.
Marjorie was a gifted craftswoman and homemaker who loved sewing, knitting, tatting and embroidery. Her granddaughters, great-granddaughters and other little girls wore dresses she smocked and sewed for them.
Children loved to go to her house for cookies and to play with the toys she kept stored for them. She kept busy teaching Sunday school, leading 4-H, volunteering at the Care Center and doing innumerable, thoughtful acts of kindness for family, church family and friends.
Marjorie showed her love for people by baking pies, breads and cookies. She cooked meals to entertain in her home as well as preparing food for people who were sick, had surgery or were known to love her apple pies and homemade bread.
A Southern woman, Marjorie was born Dec. 3, 1922, in Woodbury, Tenn., as one of 10 children. She lived in a small rural community, graduating from Central High School.
After high school, she completed business courses in Nashville, Tenn., and worked for the Selective Service, where she met her future husband, Bill Wells, who was stationed in Nashville after enlisting in the army during World War II.
Bill and Marjorie lived in Tennessee until he was sent to India as part of the Army Air Corps. Marjorie lived with her mother and sisters, who had moved to Detroit during this time.
Once Bill completed his military duty, they moved back to the family farm in Pine Grove.
Respecting her wishes, Marjorie was buried on Oct. 9 at Pine Grove Cemetery in a family-led service. A celebration of her life was held the following day at Hood River Church of Christ.
Marjorie is survived by her husband, Bill; four children, 11 grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her family, church family and all who knew her.
