Marjorie Fern (King) Truu, 86, passed away Jan. 20, 2014, at her home in Hood River, Ore., surrounded by her loved ones. She was born Dec. 27, 1927, at the family home on Portland Way to Judson Everett King and Velma “Ruth” (Miller).
Marjorie was the second-born child to Everett and Ruth, joining big sister Velma “Ruth” Jr., “Tootie,” and became big sister to baby brother Edwin Everett, “Cap,” a couple of years later. Though childhood during the Depression years on a farm was lean at times, there was always abundant hard work, nourishment, and love, plus the blessing of being born into a family with a sense of humor. She learned to be self-sufficient, frugal and strong.
She attended Barrett school first through eighth grade, and graduated from the Hood River High School in 1946. Through her school years and her employment at the Rialto Theatre, Apple Growers Association, Oregon-Washington Telephone Company, and Pacific Title and Trust in Hood River, she acquired lifelong friendships.
Marjorie moved to Portland in 1961, and worked at Fred Meyer’s, retiring after 25 years of service in 1986. During those years she acquired more lifelong friendships. On June 8, 1974, she married Arvo Truu. They enjoyed life on the river in their houseboat until Arvo’s death in 1986.
After his death, she moved to Hood River to be close to family. Retirement years were spent hiking in the Gorge, picnics at Lost Lake, playing cards, traveling, music, sewing and needlework.
For 62 years, “Aunt Marjorie” made sure each Christmas, birthday, graduation, wedding and new birth was filled with gifts and lots of love for her nieces, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She loved her cats and chocolate, hated lightning and improperly made beds, and had a love/hate relationship with politics.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Ruth; her husband Arvo; aunt Beulah Wahlgren (King); sister Tootie and her cats, Black Kitty, Sylvester and Chetty.
She is survived by her brother Edwin King (Bonnie), nieces Teri Lee Radliff (Dick), Lorna Paddock (Rod), Margie Roberts (Paul), Deborah Popp (Wes), and Kristy Draper (Corey). She is also survived by great-nieces Amy Tausend and Raena Draper, great-nephews Christopher Roberts (Krista), Bradley Roberts and Cody Draper.
Marjorie is also survived by great-great-niece Rosemary Nickel and great-great-nephews Thomas Nickel, Roam Tausend and Riley Roberts.
Marjorie chose to be cremated and asked that her family scatter her ashes in a place dear to her heart. Also, at her request, a Celebration of Life will be a picnic at Lost Lake later this summer. Marjorie said, “I don’t want people freezing their shirttails off!”
