Marianne L. Fletcher, 95, a longtime resident of Odell, Ore., passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Columbia Basin Care Facility of The Dalles, Ore. Marianne was born on Nov. 20, 1919, in Hood River, Ore., to Charles A. and Mary (Fenwick) Leveque. She was the second child and only girl in the family with brothers Charles, Philip and Tommy.
Marianne’s father was a French-Canadian logger, so she spent parts of her youth in Ontario and Quebec, Canada, as well as Klamath Falls, Ore., and Longview, Wash. She graduated from Hood River High School in 1937 and shortly thereafter met a dashing young man from Odell, Ore., named Loren Fletcher, and married him on Nov. 27, 1938, in Hood River.
They moved into a house at the Fletcher Family Orchard and she became “housewife-in-charge” while Loren ran the orchard. They raised three children: Susan Kathleen, Loren Philip (Buz) and Timothy Wayne. She was always there to pack snacks for ski trips to Cooper Spur, taking care of lunch, dinner and first aid on trips to Diamond Lake, Long Beach, Wash., and water ski trips to Koberg Beach on the Columbia River.
Loren and Marianne were lifelong members of the Odell Methodist Church and Marianne was one of the original members of the SunSet Ladies group which was famous for their annual Christmas fair. In the 1950s they became associated with the Cheney Dance Associates and taught dancing lessons in Hood River, The Dalles and Portland for almost 50 years. She made several trips to the South Pacific with Loren on cruise ships working with the social staff and teaching dance lessons and putting on exhibitions. She was also very proud of her garden at home and loved growing roses.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Johnson, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; son, Loren (Buz) Fletcher and his wife, Judy, of White Salmon, Wash.; grandsons Branden Fletcher, of Odell, and Jeff Johnson, of Calgary; granddaughters Erica Johnson, of Calgary, Nicole Herron, of Gresham, Ore., and Lauren Fletcher, of Bonney Lake, Wash.; great-grandsons Gus Fletcher, Tucker Fletcher, Dylan Fletcher, Timothy Fletcher and Tanner Fletcher; great-granddaughters Brandi Fletcher, Caidleagh Gianino, Addison Johnson and Raegan Johnson; daughter-in-law Kathy Fletcher, of Gresham, Ore.; and last but not least, great-great-granddaughter Harlow Fletcher.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Loren Fletcher, in 2005; brother Charles Leveque in 2014; son Tim Fletcher in 2011, and grandson Ben Fletcher.
A celebration of life will be held in August (date, time and location to be announced later).
Donations are encouraged to be made in Marianne’s name to Heart of Hospice.
