Kerry Charles Bennett died peacefully in his sleep at home in Cascade locks on March 6, 2016. He lived 80-plus long and fruitful years. Kerry was born in Vancouver, Wash., on April 23, 1935, to Kenneth and Grace Bennett.
In 1952, Kerry’s dad was hired as manager at the salmon hatchery being built in Sandy, Ore. Kerry was hired by the contractor building the hatchery. When school started that year, he started as a freshman at Sandy Union High. Kerry graduated from Sandy Union High in May 1955. He lettered in both football and wrestling. After graduating, he worked at the salmon hatchery in Oakridge, Ore. In June of 1957, he joined the US Army Reserves, and finished his service in 1963. He returned to Oakridge Hatchery June 8, 1958, and he married Beverly Ream. They had four children, Tamera, Kevin, Allen and Rodney. In December 1963, they moved to Bonneville Fish Hatchery at Bonneville Dam. Kerry was transferred to Oxbow Hatchery in 1967, where he was promoted to Assistant Manager. He retired in 1990 with 35 years of service with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
Kerry was an avid outdoors man. He loved fishing, hunting, hiking, mushroom hunting and wild blackberry picking. Kerry was coach for little league, before his own boys were old enough to play. He was very active in the Cascade Locks Community Church, and Cascade Locks Lions club. He transported eye tissue for the Oregon lions Eye Bank. In Lions he served in all the leadership roles, and he received a Melvin Jones Fellow awarded by Lions Club International Foundation. Kerry was very active in the community, and served as a member of the local school board.
Kerry was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Jonathan. He is survived by his wife and children, nine grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a brother Jerry, and sisters Gwen and Kate.
As some old friends say, Kerry has been “promoted to Heaven.” On mortal earth he will be long and lovingly remembered by his family many, many trends for his kindness and generosity of spirit.
A graveside service will be held Friday, March 11 at 3 p.m. at the Cascade Locks Cemetery (WaNaPa St. N.W., Cascade Locks, OR 97014). A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 12 at 3:30 p.m. at the Cascade Locks Community Church (5 S.W. Benson Ave., Cascade Locks, OR 97014), with a reception to follow.
