Kerry Charles Bennett

Kerry Charles Bennett died peacefully in his sleep at home in Cascade locks on March 6, 2016. He lived 80-plus long and fruitful years. Kerry was born in Vancouver, Wash., on April 23, 1935, to Kenneth and Grace Bennett.

In 1952, Kerry’s dad was hired as manager at the salmon hatchery being built in Sandy, Ore. Kerry was hired by the contractor building the hatchery. When school started that year, he started as a freshman at Sandy Union High. Kerry graduated from Sandy Union High in May 1955. He lettered in both football and wrestling. After graduating, he worked at the salmon hatchery in Oakridge, Ore. In June of 1957, he joined the US Army Reserves, and finished his service in 1963. He returned to Oakridge Hatchery June 8, 1958, and he married Beverly Ream. They had four children, Tamera, Kevin, Allen and Rodney. In December 1963, they moved to Bonneville Fish Hatchery at Bonneville Dam. Kerry was transferred to Oxbow Hatchery in 1967, where he was promoted to Assistant Manager. He retired in 1990 with 35 years of service with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
