Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Kelly Winston passed away on Oct. 2, 2018, at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, Ore. Kelly was born on May 20, 1922, and was 96 years of age at the time of his passing.
Kelly was born in Hood River, Ore., to Thomas and Ida (Snell) Winston, the second of five children. Kelly attended Barrett Elementary School and is a graduate of Hood River High School. He started a lifelong career as an equipment operator upon graduation from high school.
One of his first jobs was driving a truck on the Old Columbia River Highway to Portland, hauling a wide variety of loads. Then, upon the start of World War II, he replaced his best friend, Elwood Hutson, who was drafted into service. He drove a log truck for the Huston brothers until he received his own draft notice.
Joining the Army, he served from December 1942 until December 1945 as a medic in the Philippines, serving at the front on The Okinawa Islands. Upon returning stateside, the first person he recognized in the train depot in Portland, Ore., was none other than his best friend Elwood Hutson … a story he loved to tell. It was a great relief to see his buddy again and return home to the Northwest.
He continued his career of trucking, first delivering pipe to the pipeline project in Condon, Ore., followed by years in the timber industry as a faller, log truck driver and finally as a millwright at the Neal Creek Mill in Odell, Ore.
Kelly met his wife, Rozell Dehart, at a baseball game; he was playing with her brother-in-law, Jim Weseman, who introduced them. They were married Aug. 20, 1950 (on his father’s birthday). Together, they had four children, Tim (Teri) Winston of Hood River, Debbie (Kent) Berkey of Enterprise, Ore., Eric Winston (deceased), and Mary (David) Jacobs of The Dalles; grandchildren, Tony (Roxanne) Winston of Eugene, Ore., Tricia (Chris) Losee of The Dalles, Kuyler (Christie) Lang of Walla Walla, Wash., Emily Lang of Florida, Tamara Winston (Darrick) Smith of Hood River, Livi Jacobs of The Dalles and Eric Jacobs of Tillamook, Ore.; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, followed by a graveside service at Idlewilde Cemetery, 980 Tucker Road, Hood River.
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson’s Tribute Center • Celilo Chapel, 204 E. Fourth St., The Dalles. Visit www.AndersonsTributeCenter.com to leave a note of condolence for the family.
