Jane Sheppard Merydith, age 93, of Springfield, Ore., passed away peacefully on Nov. 7, 2018. She was born to Ruth Jordan Sheppard and William Orville Sheppard on March 23, 1925. She married Ted Merydith on June 6, 1948. Ted passed away on July 19, 2008.
Jane grew up in Hood River, Ore., the oldest of four children. She graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor’s degree in home economics and education and was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. She met her husband of over 60 years, Ted Merydith, at college on a blind date.
Jane and Ted began their teaching careers in Moro, Ore., then moved to Springfield in 1950 and became active members of the local community. They built their own home on Prescott Lane and raised four children there. Her children are, Ted Merydith Jr. (Janet) of Eugene, Steve (Gail) Merydith of Redmond, Ore., Ruth (Jan) Kissell of Deming, N.M. and Jan (Dave) Horton of Springfield. As a young family of six, they enjoyed numerous car trips in their station wagon. They drove to Anaheim, San Diego, Mexico, Seattle World’s Fair, Canada, various camping locations, and made many trips to Hood River and The Dalles.
She worked many years as a substitute teacher for the Springfield School District. She was a member of Eastern Star, a long time member of a women’s bridge group and an active member of Ebbert Memorial Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She loved to entertain and was a wonderful hostess for family gatherings. Jane and Ted started a family tradition of gathering at the Oregon coast every year for a weekend in the summertime, which was always something to look forward to by everyone in the family. This tradition began in 1972 and continues today.
In addition to her children, survivors include her brother, William Sheppard Jr. of Hood River; twin sisters, Susan Copper of The Dalles and Sally Kirkwood of Wasilla, Alaska; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank the people at Bayberry Commons Assisted Living and Memory Care, where Jane lived for the past few years.
A memorial service will be held at Ebbert Memorial Methodist Church in Springfield on Friday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Ebbert Memorial Church Memorial Fund.
