Fred L. Flora, 87, of The Dalles, Ore., formerly of Lebanon, Ore., died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Oregon Veterans’ Home in The Dalles.
He was born Nov. 29, 1925, in Ontonagon, Mich. to Fred and May Vicktoria (LaBrie) Flora.
He was raised and educated in Ontonagon. After graduating from high school in 1944, he joined the Army and served as a combat soldier in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He earned two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and the rank of sergeant. After the war, he attended college at Northern Michigan University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1951.
He married Dorothy Nocerini in Iron River, Mich., in July 1951. They moved to Lebanon in 1955. He was a teacher for Lebanon Public Schools for many years. He also had worked in farming, carpentry, and at Linn Gear. He and his wife divorced in 2001. He moved to The Dalles in 2008 after suffering a stroke.
He belonged to St. Edward Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.
He enjoyed making furniture, farming, hunting, fishing, and computers.
He is survived by his son Fred J. Flora, Springfield; daughters Mary Jane Flora, Fairbanks, Alaska; Sally Kernan, Redmond, Wash.; Susan Flora, Fairbanks; and Joan Flora, Canby, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister Elaine Marschner.
At his request, no services will be held.
