Frances Schlosser, 87, longtime Hood River, Ore., resident, passed away July 5, 2011, at Hawks Ridge Assisted Living Community with family by her side. She was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Portland, Ore., to George and Anna (Bloomquist) Stilwell.
Services to honor Frances are planned for Tuesday, July 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1501 Belmont Ave., Hood River, with the praying of the Rosary at 10 a.m. and Mass at 11 a.m.; graveside rites will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Frances attended Buckman and Hosford grade schools in Portland, graduating in the class of 1941 from Washington High School, followed by Pacific Business College. She went to work as a secretary for a hardware business in Portland.
Frances loved music and the theater. She enjoyed playing the violin for the Portland Junior Symphony. A close friend introduced her to a nice young man whom had recently moved to Portland, from North Dakota by the name of John W. Schlosser.
Frances and John were married June 29, 1946. While living in Portland they were blessed with four children: David, Julie, John and Nancy.
Frances and John embarked on a new adventure in 1960, when John heard about a machine shop in Hood River that was offered for sale. They purchased Huotte's Machine Shop, later changing the name to Schlosser Machine. Frances spent many evenings at the shop doing the books. Their business was growing and so was their family, with the addition of a fifth child, Vincent.
Frances was a devout Catholic and spent many hours volunteering at St. Mary's Catholic Church as an active member of the Altar Society, singing in the choir and teaching CCD. She and many of her friends from church enjoyed taking day trips hiking and gathering for lunch. They became lovingly known as "The Happy Hoofers."
Frances and John lived for their family; gatherings and holidays were always bursting with love and laughter at the Schlosser home. Frances enjoyed creating special traditions such as the annual Easter egg and scavenger hunt, even as the family grew in numbers.
Surviving Frances are her children: David (Jane) Schlosser of Anchorage, Alaska, Julie (Phil) Fehrenbacher, of Salem, Ore., John R. (Jan) Schlosser, Nancy (Mike) Blanchette and Vincent (Jennifer) Schlosser, all of Hood River; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and other extended family and many friends.
