Floyd Malcolm MacKinnon

No matter how weak and tired he became, he never forgot on a daily basis to let us know how thankful he was for everything we did for him, and what a lucky man he was to have all of us. (We were the lucky ones.)

Born Dec. 23, 1934, in Hood River, Ore., to Malcolm Henry and Dorothea (Schreiner) MacKinnon, Mac lived his first years of life in Cascade Locks, Ore., where he began in first year of school.

From ages 8 through 12, Mac and his two younger sisters, Leona and Donna, were placed in the Children’s Farm Home in Corvallis, Ore., while his father served his country with the Fighting Seabees during World War II. After returning from war, his father married Mac’s stepmother, Grace Zinc, whom he referred to as his “Amazing Grace.”

The rest of his childhood was spent in Salem, Ore., where he attended North Salem High School until he joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. He served on the USS Shelton from January 1952 to December 1955. During his service years he spent time in Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippine Islands, Iwo Jima and Thailand, along with several other places.

After the service he returned home to Salem, where he met and married D. Charlene Boyes Renaud on March 1, 1956. They made their home in Salem until moving to Hood River, Ore., in 1964.

While living in Salem, Mac made his living as a cabinet maker and also served as a volunteer fireman. After moving to Hood River he worked for Cascade Locks Lumber Company, Union Pacific Railroad and United Telephone (which later became Sprint), also serving at West Side Fire Department as a volunteer.

Mac had several hobbies, his favorite being gardening, spending numerous hours a day tending to his yard and garden. He also enjoyed woodworking and fishing, never really caring if he caught a fish or not, but enjoying being outdoors in the beautiful Hood River Valley.

At one time he and his wife enjoyed ballroom dancing and square dancing, where Mac enjoyed taking the microphone and being the caller of a few rounds now and again, which he actually became very good at.

Mac leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Charlene; son Michael (Michelle) MacKinnon, of Hood River; daughters Cheryl (Johnson) Marsalis, of Deer Park, Wash., Melodie Lesbo (Jerry) Wornek, of Elko, Nev., and Claudette (Mike) Adams and Peggy MacKinnon, both of Hood River. He was a proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren and soon-to-be 15 great-grandchildren, the brother to two sisters, Linda Kronenberg and Donna Wolfe, along with one brother, Lee MacKinnon, all of Salem, Ore.

He was preceded in death by both parents and his stepmother, two sisters, Leona and Pamela, along with an infant brother (name unknown).

A celebration of life service will be held at First Baptist Church on Aug. 14 at 11 a.m., located at 1889 Belmont Drive in Hood River. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be made to Horizon Christian School in Hood River, in memory of Mac (contact Bruce Parker, 541-386-6088).
