Everett Joseph Long passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 22, 2011, after he collapsed while working in the orchard and was only 70 at the time of his death.
Services are planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, Ore. Family friend and celebrant speaker Bob Huskey will officiate. Interment will be at Pine Grove Butte Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Pine Grove Fire Hall.
Everett was born Jan. 1, 1941, at Caldwell, Idaho, to Cecil and Thelma (Berkenbile) Long. At the age of 2 he moved with family to the Pine Grove area where he had resided since.
He graduated from Wy'east High School in 1959. He served in the National Guard at the Hood River Armory and was honorably discharged as a sergeant.
On Feb. 3, 1961, he married Maxine Kaley at Hood River, Ore., and to their union were blessed four children: Joseph, Mark, Ellen and Pamela.
Everett worked for Webster Orchards for 15 years and Thomsen Orchards for 39 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and the outdoors as well as reading and garage sales. Above all of his hobbies he loved his family and looked for chances to be with them.
Everett was a member of the Hood River Elks Lodge and a volunteer for the Pine Grove Fire Department for 33 years.
Everett is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 50 years, Maxine, at their home in Pine Grove; three children, Joe and Denise Long, of Pine Grove, Ellen and Wes Lund, of Goldendale, Wash., and Pam and Ray Saffell, of Salem, Ore.; nine grandchildren: Lisa, Cassie, TJ, Kevin, Alex, Kaity, Steve, Tyler and Seth; three great-grandchildren: Tiffani, Andrew and Emilee; sisters Terrie and Sandy; brother, John; and a host of extended family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Eldon and son Mark.
Memorials are encouraged to be made in memory of Everett to the Pine Grove Fire Department.
