Eva Elizabeth Ernster passed away on March 18, 2011, at home in Rainier, Ore. She was born Nov. 26, 1911, and was 99 years of age at the time of her passing.
Catholic funeral rites are planned for 10 a.m. March 30 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1501 Belmont Ave., Hood River, Ore., with burial to follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Eva was born in White Sulphur Springs, Mont., to Robert and Elizabeth (Simon) Albertson. She moved with her family as a child to the Columbia Gorge, living in Hood River and Cascade Locks for over 75 years. She graduated from Hood River High School and went on to nursing school at the old Saint Vincent in Portland.
On May 5, 1931, she married John P. Ernster in Tigard, Ore. John passed away on Sept. 6, 1974. John and Eva ran the fox farm in Hood River for two years, then they ran the fox farm in Cascade Locks for six years, until silver fox furs went out of business due to Canada flooding the market.
Eva was an active homemaker and also the weather reporter for the Cascade Locks emergency airport. She was a charter member of the Cascade Locks Garden Club and has a bench dedicated to her at the Cascade Locks Museum.
She was a volunteer for seven years at the Columbia Gorge Vista House.
