Enid “Doloris” Rand went to be with Jesus on Oct. 8, 2018. She was 85 years old. Doloris was born July 31, 1933, in Topeka, Kan., only child to Fred and Mada Strong. At age 12, Doloris gave her heart to Jesus at a VBS. She skipped joyfully home that day, feeling loved for the first time, a moment she remembered and cherished to the end of her life.
After high school, Doloris attended Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada. She fell in love with a young Bible teacher, Ernest Robert Rand (Bob). They married in Sept. 1956 and moved to Japan for two years for Bob’s military service.
In 1958 in Portland, Ore., Doloris gave birth to first daughter, Rebecca. In 1967, they moved to Eagle Creek, Ore. to raise their growing brood in the country. They were ahead of their time, eating whole grains and organic food, growing huge gardens, canning and freezing food they grew. Doloris gave birth to her last three children at home with a chiropractor in attendance. In 1974, they began home-schooling their children.
In 1975, the Rands bought Silver Star Ranch, near Washougal, and started a Christian community where families farmed together, and children were home-schooled.
Doloris was a beautiful, warm and generous person. She came alive when friends visited. Family friends expressed how loved and welcomed they felt by her and what an inspiration she was.
Bob and Doloris moved to Down Manor, assisted living, in Hood River, Ore., to be closer to family in 2006. Bob passed away in 2010. Doloris moved to Brookside Assisted Living where she enjoyed dominoes, visits from family and oldies TV shows.
Doloris was preceded in death by her daughter, Rebecca, and husband, Bob. She is survived by six children, Rachel Rand, Shymkent, Kazakhstan and Ruth Maletz, Hood River; Rhoda Gigstad, Vancouver, Wash.; Roseanna Tran, Raleigh, N.C.; Ramona Bogott, St. Petersberg, Russia; and Adam Rand, Hood River. All her children made it home to say goodbye. She is survived by 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A lovely family graveside service was held on Oct. 9, 2018 at Washougal Cemetery.
