Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Emma Lucinda (Wilson) Bowie died peacefully March 19, 2011, at Hood River Care Center. Emma was born March 26, 1913, near Dallas, Iowa, in Marion County to Guy and Nettie (Brown) Wilson.
Emma was the middle of six children, including one brother, Samuel, sisters Vesta, Grace and Blanche and one sister lost in infancy. She grew up and attended schools in Marion and Jasper counties, and adored the famous covered bridges of Iowa.
Emma was a telephone operator during the 1930s for NW Bell Co. when she met the love of her life, Philip Nolan Bowie, whom she married in Monroe, Iowa, on March 22, 1937. That same day they got in their 1927 Star Model M car and drove to Oregon.
After they arrived in Hood River they lived and worked on the State Experiment Farm for 10 years then moved closer to town. Philip worked for the AGA fruit packing plant while Emma worked at the cannery, and later baby-sat for numerous families in her home for a number of years.
The Bowies dedicated their lives to the Lord before they were married in Iowa, and continued worship at the CMA Church of Hood River until the time of Philip's death in 1967. Preceding Emma in death are her parents, husband and all five siblings.
Surviving her are her daughters, Karen Bowie, of Hood River, and Linda Stroud and her husband, Doug, of Ukiah, Ore.; grandsons Bryan Stroud and his wife, Jeanette, of Pendleton, Dave Stroud and his wife, Laura, of Wilsonville, Loren Stroud and his wife, Melinda, of Athena, and Shawn Caldwell, of Gresham; granddaughters Danielle Caldwell, of The Dalles, Roxanne Fridley and her husband, Dallas, of Hood River, and Tammy Stroud, of Jefferson; and all of her great-grandchildren.
Emma was a very selfless and kind-hearted woman who had some heartaches in life but was never one to complain. She will be forever missed and revered by all those who love her.
