Edward Sheppard Allen, 95, died Sept. 4, 2015, while residing at Hillside Place, in Lincoln City, Ore. Ed was born Dec. 20, 1919, in Dukes Valley, Ore., the oldest child of Lee and Mary Allen. Ed attended grade school at Central Vale, then Odell High School and was a proud alumnus of Oregon State University. After college, Ed joined the John Deere Plow Company.
In July 1941, Ed married Bertha (Binnie) J. Goe of Pine Grove, Ore.
Ed entered the John Deere Army Ordnance Battalion in October 1942, as second lieutenant. During World War II, Ed spent 11 months in England, 11 months in France and nine months in Germany. He finished his military career at the Nuremburg trials and retired as a captain in the Army in August 1946.
After returning home to Hood River, he went to work for CM & WO Sheppard in irrigation sales until Dec. 31, 1948. Ed then managed Scott Aitken Orchards in 1949 and 1950. On Jan. 1, 1951, he joined Coulter Motor Company. Ed and Binnie, along with Leonard and Iris Hay, purchased Coulter Motor Co. four years later. In August 1968, E & L Auto Parts was opened and a year later, the Allens bought Allen Hay Motors and the Hays bought E & L Auto Parts. Ed and Binnie retired on Dec 31, 1983.
Bertha Goe Allen passed away in November 1988 and Ed moved to Gleneden Beach, Ore., in 1990. In 2007, Ed moved to Dorchester House in Lincoln City. In March 2009 Ed’s son John passed away.
Ed is survived by his son Tom, of Cha-am, Thailand; his grandson Edward, of Anchorage, Alaska; his sister Marylee Bork (Bill), of Hood River; sisters-in-law Joyce Allen (Glen), of The Dalles, Ore., and Frances Goe Arnold, of Hood River; seven Allen nieces and nephews and 16 Goe nieces and nephews.
Ed’s brother Glen Allen died in February 2013, six months after his 90th birthday.
At Ed’s request, there will be no service. There was an open house for family and friends Sunday, Sept. 13.
