Diane Lee Gadway passed peacefully into memory at her Snowden home on Oct. 9, 2018, aided by Heart of Hospice, especially Dr. Stephen McClennon and RN Donita Brownlee.
Diane was born Jan. 17, 1943, to her parents Ida and Richard Sloan of Brookings, S.D. She grew up on their nearby farm and attended school in Brookings. She married Terry Painter of Rapid City, S.D., and with him had a son, Troy Darrin Painter.
After a divorce in Portland, Ore., she met Roger Gadway with whom she would spend the next 50 years, marrying him and moving to the White Salmon area where they built their current home.
Diane lived a life of creativity, weaving both art and music into her daily life. She often said that she wanted to live an illustrated life.
She kept journals of her thoughts and poems and made drawings and paintings of her activities, political events, and subjects of her inquisitive imagination.
She especially liked public art and produced several shows for the White Salmon Library, some of them with her friend and ‘co-arty’ Janet Essley.
As an adult, she developed her musical skills playing mandolin and guitar with the Old Time Fiddlers and later playing ukulele and percussion with her husband as ‘Gadzukes.
She is survived by her son and her husband.
The last week of her life she directed friends putting together a show of her art and was present as friends visited and played music, drew pictures, wrote her messages, and celebrated her life in the context of her many accomplishments. No additional memorial will be held.
Memorials may be sent to Greenpeace or Friends of the White Salmon River.
