Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Delbert “Deb” Eugene Slack of Ocean Park, Wash., was born July 28, 1930, in Potter, Neb., to Bernard “BJ” and Edna Hawkins Slack. Deb passed away Feb. 3, 2013, with his family by his side.
Deb graduated from high school in 1948 in Hood River, Ore. He married Marilyn “Sookie” June Davies on May 11, 1948, in Stevenson, Wash. During their 34 years of marriage they lived in various sawmill towns in Northern California and Oregon while raising their family.
Marilyn preceded Deb in death on Sept. 11, 1982, from cancer.
Deb later married Sally Mann on May 28, 1983, in Hood River.
In his spare time Deb enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening and family camping trips, and in his later years he enjoyed walking his dogs on the beach and visiting with his friends who walked every day.
Deb is survived by his wife, Sally Slack; his children: Linda Petersen, of Oregon City, Steve and Shelley Slack, of Grants Pass, and Todd and Debbie Slack, of Carson, Wash.; nine grandchildren: Brian and Steve Petersen, Courtney Slack Reisler, Kelly Slack Maxwell, Jay Slack, Kerri Slack Wright, Todd Slack Jr., Sara Slack and Katie Slack. He is also survived by his 17½ great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will take place later this year in Grants Pass, Ore., followed by a family camping trip to a favorite camping spot of Deb’s.
Arrangements are under the direction of Major Family Funeral Home, 112 A St., Springfield, OR 97477; 541-746-9667; www.majorfamilyfuneralhome.com.
