Dalla “Lorene” Beth passed away Feb. 13, 2018, in The Dalles, Ore., surrounded by her family. She was 91 years old and just a few hours shy of her 92nd birthday. She was born on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 1926, to Henry Frank and Martha Delaney Whittle-Hufford-Rizley.
Mom grew up in Springdale, Ark., with seven siblings. She met our father, Harold Eugene Beth, and they married on July 26, 1942, in Springdale. He passed away at our farmhouse on Lost Lake Road on Dee Flat on Dec. 2, 1999.
After they married, Mom and Dad stayed in Arkansas for a while. Dad wanted to be an orchardist. They first came to Hood River, Ore., then traveled to the Yakima, Pasco and Kennewick areas in Washington to work. By 1950, they had three children and they moved back to Hood River, near Odell, so Dad could work in the orchards. In 1954, they bought a farmhouse with about 28 acres on Lost Lake Road on Dee Flat. We continued to live in Odell while Dad worked in the orchards. Later Dad added on rooms to the farmhouse and we all moved there. They cleared the farmhouse land and planted strawberries. In the 1960s, they bought 10 acres in Odell and again planted strawberries, followed a few years later by a planting of cherry trees. Once the cherries started producing in Odell, they plowed up all the strawberries at both locations and began raising cattle and other animals on the farm on Dee Flat. By 1964, they had two more children. In 1974, they bought a 20-acre cherry orchard in The Dalles. Our parents were a hard-working couple. Mom worked beside Daddy all the time. She helped in every way she could.
On the farm, Mom and Dad had a large vegetable garden, all kinds of berries and some fruit trees. Mom canned everything she could. She liked to can, read, and to crochet. They enjoyed traveling in wintertime. She was a member and president of the Women’s Home Extension held at the Dee Fire Hall. She was a member and was baptized at the Church of Christ. On June 9, 1984, Mom completed her G.E.D. through Treaty Oak Education in The Dalles.
Our Mom is survived by four daughters and a son: Glenda (David) West and their dog Addie of Carson, Wash., Shirley Chaffin and her dogs Buddy and Annie of Deer Park, Wash., Barbara Jensen and her dog Sadie of The Dalles, Dorothy (Jim) Bradshaw and their dog Kaylee of Dallas, Ore., and Harold (Cindy) Beth, Jr. of Hood River. Mom had 11 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Frank and Martha Delaney Whittle-Hufford-Rizley, her sisters Bea Rizley-Westbrook-Holman, Leona Rizley-Lane, and Irene Rizley-Macy-Reeves, half-sister Frances Ellenbarger-Hancock-Turner, her brother Carl Rizley, half-brothers Lawrence and Ray Hufford, son-in-law Maurice “Moe” Chaffin and one great-grandchild, Olivia Louise Chaffin.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Anderson’s Tribute Center, Hood River. A public viewing will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, also at Anderson’s. Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals • Receptions • Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave.
