Caren Flothow passed away peacefully on Oct. 24, 2012, at Brookside Manor of Hood River, Ore. Caren was born on Sept. 24, 1929, in Germany, and was the oldest of four children born to Walter and Anna Preiss.
After the end of World War II at the age of 17, Caren moved to Paris, and later to New York City, in order to pursue her career as a professional ballerina, dancer, model and actress. She was a member of the June Taylor Dancers and the dancing ensemble in the original cast of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which played at the Zeigfeld Theatre in New York City from December 1949 to September 1951. She also appeared in various magazines in both the United States and Europe as a model.
Caren met Paul Monash in New York City and they were married in 1953. In 1956, they relocated to Los Angeles, Calif., and had two children together, Stephanie and Jessica.
Caren enjoyed cooking, playing tennis, gardening and dancing. Aside from being a professional dancer and ballerina she was also an accomplished cook whose specialties included Bouillabaisse, Chicken Veronique and an amazing Paella Andalucia.
In 2002, Caren married Rudolph Flothow. Caren and Rudy spent their time in Palm Springs, Calif., and East Burke, Vt.
Caren was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husbands, Paul and Rudy, and her youngest brother, Peter. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Stephanie and Steve Robins and Jessica and Paul Berty. She is also survived by her brother and his wife, Walter and Renate Preiss, her brother Peter’s widow, Beate Preiss, and her sister Lore Latuner.
Caren’s family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the management and staff of Brookside Manor. Caren resided at Brookside for the last 20 months of her life. She was treated very respectfully and lovingly by everyone there.
No formal services for Caren are planned, but a private celebration will be held later.
