Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
A celebration of life for Bonnie Jean Calmettes will be held at the Elks Lodge in Hood River on Saturday, Jan. 9, from 6-8 p.m.
Bonnie was born in Hoff, Ore., on April 10, 1922, to Jess B. Edington and Ethel M. Mercer. Her mother passed away in 1926 and she was raised by her father, Jess Edington.
Bonnie moved with her family to Hood River, Ore., when she was 4 years old. Jess later remarried, giving Bonnie a loving stepmother, Kate Mazie Montgomery.
Bonnie received her education at local schools, graduating from Hood River High School in 1941. After World War II ended and her sweetheart returned, she married Raymond Martin Calmettes. The couple owned and operated Heights Greenhouse, later Heights Floral, in Hood River until 1979 when they sold the business and retired.
With their new freedom, Bonnie and Ray took the opportunity to travel. They enjoyed spending time down south where they reconnected with old friends. They cruised through the Panama Canal, explored the Grand Canyon and also visited China. Aside from traveling, Bonnie liked to golf and collect $2 bills.
Bonnie Calmettes passed away in Hood River on Dec. 17, 2009, at the age of 87. She is survived by her husband, Ray Calmettes, who resides at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles; sons Mike Calmettes, of Modesto, Calif., Tim Calmettes, of Sisters, Ore., and Dave Calmettes, of Milwaukie, Ore.
She will also be missed by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Cerise, and her daughter, Molly Ann Calmettes.
