Beatrice Joy Jubitz

She was born in Hood River, Ore., on May 18, 1941, to Beatrice LaVonne Jenson and Harve Theodore Vernon. The first years of her life were spent on a farm in Barrett. She attended school in the Barrett grade school, Park Street, May Street and Hood River High School. She attended Brigham Young University as a freshman and then went to business college in Portland.

Joy was courted by Pete Jubitz, also of Hood River. Their relationship started in the third grade and then was dormant until their sophomore year in high school. They were married in 1961 in Hood River and lived in Vancouver, Wash., and Provo, Utah, while Pete completed his college studies.

They lived in Gresham, Ore., Yakima and Kent, Wash., and then returned to Hood River to purchase Franz Hardware, the family-owned business.

Joy spent many years as the buyer and merchandiser of the housewares department where she used her considerable skills as a decorator. She also did much of the office work.

As the mother of a large family, she was very adept at making large quantities of food from scratch. She spent many hours baking, canning and freezing foods to provide for her family. She was an accomplished seamstress and made many of the clothes for her younger children.

In her later years she enjoyed quilting. Most of the grand- and great-grandchildren have their own Grandma Jubitz quilt.

Joy was an active and dedicated member of the LDS Church, holding man positions of leadership serving others. She served as the Relief Society president, a women’s organization, in the Goldendale Ward for three and a half years. She also served alongside her husband fulfilling his local and regional callings in the church.

She was preceded in death by her sister Mae Williams, brother Calvin Vernon and her parents, Harve and Beatrice Vernon.

Joy is survived by her husband, Pete, with whom she recently celebrated 53 years of marriage. She was the mother of eight children: Aaron and Stacey and four boys, Cynthia and Paul Schuetzler and three boys and two girls, Brad and Kathy and two boys, Mark and Connie and two boys and one girl, Stefanie and Dan DeVoe and one boy and five girls, Vanessa and Troy Anderson and two boys and one girl, Tia and Devon Wells and one girl and four boys and Machel and Sal Rivera and two boys and one girl, for a total of 31 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and two waiting to arrive later this year.

Joy will be interred at Idlewilde Cemetery in Hood River next to her parents. Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel handled arrangements.
