Dalles City Council got briefly into the subject of tree culture Monday night when City Manager C. Dean Smith reported on condition of the lofty giant.

Architects have designed the building in an L-shape to accommodate the tree, a dominant left-over from the days when the late Evelyn Houghton lived there in her mansion.

Smith told the council that a decayed portion of the trunk, about 10 feet above ground level, has been cut out. A cable is believed to have been fastened around the tree at that point many years ago, and this may have caused the trouble.

Smith said he thinks the tree can be satisfactorily treated by filling the cavity with cement and trimming back one large limb.
