THE DALLES — Calling all ghouls, goblins and witches — it’s a monster mash in the Gorge. Proudly presented by The Dalles Overground (TDO), a month-long horror movie marathon will terrify the Grenada Theater this October, celebrating Halloween and all things spooky.
TDO is an all-volunteer non-profit founded in 2024, striving to bring original arts and culture opportunities to The Dalles. Spooktober is their latest effort to facilitate, promote and encourage community, diversity and inclusiveness through artistic media. In their brief existence, TDO has already hosted performances by internationally renowned musicians, poets, writers and filmmakers.
The festivities will kick off on Oct. 4 with a special presentation of the 1971 cult-classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” This extravagant, subversive horror/musical mash-up, originally a rowdy stage production, follows an innocent couple who stumble upon the delightfully strange mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played by Tim Curry.
On Oct. 9, audiences will relish in a sci-fi/horror double-feature of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956) and its 1978 remake starring Donald Sutherland. Though sporting distinct differences, each iteration traces a community being replaced by emotionless alien duplicates.
Next up is Greg Romero’s 1968 genre-defining zombie classic “Night of the Living Dead” on Oct. 10. When a horde of flesh-eating monsters takes over the Northeast, a ragtag group of disparate individuals must barricade themselves in an old farmhouse.
Oct. 11 presents double-feature number two with 1998’s bewitching “Practical Magic,” starring Sandra Bullock, and Sam Raimi’s campy, blood-soaked sequel “Evil Dead 2.”
Oct. 25th will feature the family-friendly “Halloweentown” and 1922’s silent, vampiric classic “Nosferatu,” accompanied by a live organist.
Michael Myers is in town on Oct. 30 in John Carpenter’s legendary 1978 nightmare “Halloween.”
Halloween night will close off the festivities with animated shorts, a costume contest and a “cocktail cavalcade.”
Daily tickets sit at $10, $65 for the entire month, with a smattering of free showings, including “Practical Magic,” “Halloweentown” and “Nosferatu.” Concessions, food and a full bar will be available at every screening.
