Cecilia Vega said she fears for the future of 60 Minutes following her ouster from the long-running CBS News magazine program on Thursday (May 28).
“I have the utmost respect and admiration for my colleagues at 60 Minutes and the stories that air every Sunday. But I very much fear what comes next for and the future of the legendary broadcast,” Vega said in a statement, per Variety.
Vega, who served as a correspondent on 60 Minutes since 2023, was fired on Thursday amid another shakeup at CBS News. In addition, fellow correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi and senior executive producers, Tanya Simon and Draggan Mihailoivich, were dropped from the show.
“In recent months, my producing teams and I have experienced efforts to insert political bias into our stories,” she continued. “Reporting teams have held back on submitting story pitches about important news topics out of fear of the internal repercussions.”
Vega added, “Let’s call this what it is: censorship, both imposed and self-driven. It is dangerous for the show and dangerous for democracy.”
60 Minutes has been at the center of controversy ever since Paramount-Skydance CEO David Ellison appointed Bari Weiss as CBS News editor-in-chief last October. Weiss has been putting her own stamp on the show, including pulling stories at the last minute. Alfonsi and others have spoken out about what they see as biased interference with the show.
In her statement, Vega suggested her firing stemmed from her refusal to fall in line. “I held the line and refused to incorporate suggestions that offend the conscience, a phrase I borrow from a colleague who has also fought to keep questionable editorial suggestions away from the facts,” she stated.
“I know from many conversations with colleagues that many producing teams and correspondents working on the show today have had to fight to maintain editorial independence with regularity,” she continued. “I am far from the only 60 Minutes correspondent who has asked herself, ‘What is my personal red line? How much can I push back before I pay the price?'”
Despite losing her job, Vega said she remains proud of her accomplishments and that she didn’t sellout. “I also walk away with an honor no one can take from me: I was the first Latina correspondent to ever be on 60 Minutes,” she said. “Today I lost an amazing job. But I still have my integrity.”
