HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley’s (HRV) Lars Welch and Emily Teets have picked up where they left off last season in Oregon Ski Racing Association competition, pacing Eagle skiers in their 2025 season opening Mt. Hood Ski Racing League meet Jan. 12 at Mt. Hood Meadows.
Teets won the girls slalom event, posting the fastest runs of the day. Her first run was in 34.69 seconds. Teets posted a second slalom run of 34.21. Teammate Arlie Sparling was fifth with her combined runs (40.19 and 38.86). Eliotte Walsh did not finish her first run, but her second run of 36.6 seconds was the third-fastest overall.
A season ago, Teets finished second in the girls giant slalom state competition and won the slalom title; her combined times in the two races earned her the overall championship and led HRV to second behind host Summit. The Hood River girls finished third behind Sandy and Grant in Mt. Hood Ski League racing in 2024, when Teets was the top individual point scorer, winning the four (of five) races she entered.
On Sunday at Mt. Hood Meadows, Welch finished second with his two boys slalom runs behind Grant High’s Tober Kling, but the HRV skier led his team to first place. Jess Aubert and Eaton Beckett finished sixth and seventh; Davis Pruder was 12th and Jaden Johnson 17th for the Eagles.
In 2024, Welch was third at state in slalom racing, ninth in giant slalom, and fourth overall individually. The HRV boys were fifth in the combined team competition a season ago.
Also at Meadows last week, Trout Lake’s Rowan Shuman was fourth in the boys slalom (runs of 38.7 and 35.58). Cade Nordquist was 35th for The Dalles. A total of 61 skiers competed in the race.
In girls slalom, The Dalles was led by Kaiya Doty, who finished sixth overall with runs of 41.63 and 39.99. Teammate Kailee Klindt was 12th with runs of 46.85 and 44.22, and Riley Nordquist was 32nd (58.56 and 56.61). Trout Lake’s Ella Shuman was 10th overall with her combined two runs. A total of 66 skiers competed in the race.
The Dalles, Hood River and Trout Lake will compete in their next league event Jan. 20 in a slalom challenger race at Ski Bowl East.
