The Special Olympics Summer State Games athletic competition July 13-14 included six local athletes from Wasco and Sherman counties who participated in the event at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
The six-member Wasco/Sherman squad, guided by Coach Marci Kalsch, included Andrew Murray, Edith Dougherty, Morgan Kalsch, Henry Kahclamat, Tim Hughes and Alyssa Massie. The group won nine medals, highlighted by Massie’s first place, gold medal winning performance in both the softball throw (9.77 meters) and the 100-meter dash (21.60 seconds).
Dougherty took second place (36.30) in the 100-meter walk, and sixth in the shot put (4.25 meters). Murray took second in the 800 meters (3:30). Hughes took third place in the 100-meter walk (51 seconds) and he was fourth in the shot put (6.85 meters).
Kalsch recorded three top-five places, including third in the 100-meter dash (22 seconds), and she was fourth in the softball throw. She also combined with teammates Murray, Massie and Kahclamat to get fifth place in the 4x100 relay (1:32).
