Three of the four area Class 1A football teams — Dufur, Sherman, and South Wasco — recorded their first wins of the 2024 season last week.
In the eight-man classification, Dufur (1-1) won 46-0 at Touchet near Walla Walla, Washington. Sherman/Condon (1-1) won at home, 44-28, over Imbler. South Wasco won at Huntington, 63-0. The fourth local team, Lyle/Wishram/Klickitat, lost, 76-0, at Adrian.
Sherman/Condon’s win over Imbler was notable because the Panthers were in the 2023 state quarterfinals last year. Sophomore running back Raul Anaya returned the opening kickoff from Imbler 85 yards for a touchdown. Anaya scored two rushing touchdowns, as well, and senior running Jayden Havins also scored on three touchdown runs.
“It was a big win for us; we needed something like that to really help us come together as a team, and I think it helps us get going in the right direction,” Coach Kyle Blagg said. “Traditionally, Imbler always has a good team; they’re well coached (by Dustan Adams) and maybe they’re having a little bit of a downfall this year, but only time will tell.”
Dufur wins first game
The Rangers (1-1) bounced back from a season opening Aug. 30, 42-30, loss to Crosspoint to earn the shutout victory over Touchet.
Coach Jack Henderson said: “We threw the ball really well and we had three guys who caught touchdown passes thrown by our sophomore quarterback Gavin Anderson (career-high 250 yards passing, 5 TDs). All of our kids really worked hard in the offseason to help improve our team and it’s showing up nice for them now. Hopefully, this is the start of a win streak for us.”
Dufur senior receiver Sonny Wilson had three touchdown receptions, freshman running back Chase Peterson had one touchdown reception. Senior running back/linebacker Nolan Cates, who transferred to Dufur from The Dalles High during the summer, caught two touchdown passes and he scored one rushing TD.
“We’re going to have a chance to win every game,” Henderson said.
Lyle loses second straight
The Cougars (0-2) played a 1A powerhouse program — in recent years — in Adrian. The Cougars will be seeking to bounce back at home Friday versus Elgin; the Cougars lost, 50-22, to the Huskies last year.
South Wasco County wins
The Redsides won easily over the Locomotives, who have lost eight straight games overlapping the past two seasons. The 63 points scored by the Redsides was their highest point total in the three years that six-man football has been an officially sanctioned OSAA sport.
