THE DALLES — The Dalles had two individual winners and also a team championship at the sunny Paul Mariman Invitational cross country meet Oct. 12 in Philomath.
The team win came from the Riverhawk boys, who won the 18-school varsity race with 67 points. Senior Caleb Caldwell led the way for The Dalles with his fourth-place finish, as the Riverhawks beat host Philomath (84) points by a comfortable margin. Caldwell clocked 17 minutes, 34 seconds on the flat, but bumpy, multiple-surface course looping around the athletic fields at Philomath High School.
Tyson Long and Trey Hodges finished eighth and ninth for The Dalles; Aiden Erickson was 20th; and Zeb Stelzer and Noah Preston were 28th and 29th.
Philomath beat runner-up The Dalles in the girls race — 37-83 — but the Riverhawks had the individual champion in senior Alaina Casady. She patiently reeled in early leader Adele Beckstead of Philomath, eventually taking the lead for good with about 500 meters remaining in the 5,000-meter race. Casady won in 19:58, while Beckstead finished third behind Lola Esplin of Junction City.
Also scoring team points (top five) for The Dalles were Abigail Pope, 17th; Kestley Hodges, 22nd; Marley Perry, 26th; and Laura Black, 34th. The Dalles freshman Luke Sorenson won the junior varsity race by 19 seconds in 19:18, leading the Riverhawks to second place.
