THE DALLES — The Riverhawks and Crook County Cowboys resumed their cross country rivalry on Sept. 27 a little closer to home — at least for the host Riverhawks — at the annual Bridget Nelson invitational at Sorosis Park.
The Dalles edged Crook County 30 to 35 in the boys race; Sandy won the girls race (in a sixth-runner tiebreaker), Crook County was second and The Dalles third. The girls race team scores had Sandy and Crook County with 57 and The Dalles with 59. Sandy was declared the winner based on its sixth runner finishing 27th (vs. 32nd for Crook County).
Individually, The Dalles senior Alaina Casady won the 5,000-meter race on the hilly Sorosis course in 20 minutes, 21 seconds — a 21-second gap over runner-up Lily Nichols of Heppner. The Dalles’ other team scores came from Abigail Pope 10th; Marley Perry 15th; Laura Black 20th; and Nayeli Vergara 24th). Ember Kahler finished a tenth of a second behind teammate Vergara (25:23.5 to 25:23.6) for the Riverhawks. Of note was Alessandra Meza’s first-place finish for The Dalles in winning the girls junior varsity race in 24:56.Â
Adam Radabaugh of Crook County won the boys race in 17:48, pulling away from The Dalles’ Caleb Caldwell in the final mile. Caldwell’s time of 18:04.4 was a personal best on the course by more than a minute.
The Dalles won the boys meet with its tight bunching from its next four varsity runners (all six, for that matter). Tyson Long, Aiden Erickson and Noah Preston were fifth through seventh, Trey Hodges was 10th, Zeb Stelzer 12th and Phoenix Nanie 15th.
Crook County countered with the third, fourth, 13th and 16th places for its team finish behind Radabaugh.
It was the second meeting this season for the likely two frontrunners — along with Molalla — for the Tri-Valley Conference title later this month. The Dalles also beat Crook County’s boys at the Sept. 21 Northwest Classic in Eugene — first place vs. fifth place. The Dalles girls were fourth at the Classic while Crook County was eighth. The two schools will compete again Oct. 16 at the Estacada Invitational at McIver Park — also the site of the Oct. 30 Tri-Valley district meet.
