Area Class 1A volleyball squads all played early season nonleague contests last week and the cream of the crop continues to be the South Wasco County High Redsides, who won two-out-of-three matches to improve their record to 5-1.
The Redsides won matches over Echo and 2A Weston-McEwen on Sept. 3 at home and lost to visiting Heppner that same day.
“The team played very well against Weston-McEwen, and we had some really long rallies,” said second-year Coach Shelley Iverson. “They never gave up on the long rallies and the girls made some great saves.”
In the grueling two-hour, five set match versus the TigersScots, the Redsides were led by junior outside hitter Bailey Udey (10 kills), sophomore middle blocker Hailee Pechanec (nine kills, three blocks), junior outside hitter/setter Jayda Iverson (seven kills, 22 digs) and senior middle blocker Macy Bell (five kills).
In other matches: The Dufur Rangers won their first match, 3-0, at Touchet High near Walla Walla, Washington. The Sherman High Huskies lost, 3-0, to North Clackamas Christian on Sept. 3 in Oregon City. The Huskies played in a Sept. 7 tournament at Griswold High School, and they won one-out-of-three pool games, including a 2-0 victory over C.S. Lewis. Horizon Christian lost Sept. 7 at home to the (then) No. 1-ranked and unbeaten Southwest Christian Wildcats (4-0).
