Week of Dec. 5-12:
$11,000 recovered — On Dec. 2, Klickitat County Deputy Tim Neher got a call that an 84-year-old resident had lost $11,000 to a computer virus scam. Scammers using burner phones had the victim mail cash to a vacant rental house in California, which scammers “commonly have victims send packages too,” Klickitat County Sheriff’s Office said. Neher worked with UPS, and with S and S Auto Value in Goldendale, to return the package.
Injured in crash — On Dec. 6, a Toyota on I-84 left its lane and hit a guardrail near milepost 93 eastbound. An ambulance took the driver, who was cited and released on reckless driving and unauthorized use of vehicle charges, to a Portland hospital. A passenger was also charged with unauthorized vehicle use.
State park theft — On Dec. 7, someone cut locks to enter the maintenance yard and shipping containers at Viento State Park, absconding with a dual axle flatbed trailer (except the license plate, which they left behind), two John Deere Gators, multiple hand tools and power tools.
Highway dog — A Dalles area motorist caught a dog running on Highway 197, which a state trooper took to the Humane Society on Dec. 10. Meanwhile Wasco County logged three dogs, and The Dalles 10.
Three non-injury crashes — Recorded by state police: Dec. 8, Toyota Camry hydroplaned on I-84, striking a highway sign near milepost 45 westbound and stopping in the ditch. The same day, a Ford rear-ended a Toyota on Highway 281, and got cited for following too closely; that Toyota’s driver got cited for lacking a license. Dec. 11, a single semi-truck at milepost 123 eastbound on I-84 hit guardrail, damaging about 50 yards, and kept going till Gilliam County deputies stopped it at milepost 128.
Hood River recored three more non-injury crashes; one abandoned car rolled across a parking lot and crashed into a building. The Dalles and Wasco County recorded seven total crashes.
DUII arrests — Dec. 5, state trooper stopped a Subaru on Cooper Spur for failing to drive within lane and arrested the 20-year-old driver for DUII. On Dec. 10, troopers stopped a car for going 83 mph on I-84 and arrested the driver on DUII and possession of methamphetamine charges. The Dalles Police logged two DUIIs.
From Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, Hood River police also nabbed three drunk drivers, lodging a Hood River resident at NORCOR on DUII - alcohol and reckless driving charges with a blood alcohol level of 0.30%.
911 mystery — The Hood River Police Department is also seeking a statement from two pedestrians who reported a driver almost hit them at Ninth and State streets on Dec. 5. After speaking with an officer, who was hurrying to a domestic violence call, the two disappeared. Dispatch later got a call from two people who told the same story, having followed the suspect to a Hood River emergency room parking lot — where the driver got arrested for DUII. The two victims didn’t stick around to be interviewed.
Charges — Dec. 5-12, OSP charged people with driving suspended (one), drug violation (one), DUII (two), reckless driving (one), unauthorized use of vehicle (two). Wasco County and The Dalles police don’t log arrests, but recored 10 warrant-related incidents. Nov. 30-Dec. 6, Hood River police charged people with assault (one), computer crime (one), mischief (one), disorderly conduct (one), DUII (three), drug violation (one), reckless driving (one), escape (one), reckless endangering (one), resisting arrest (one), theft (one), trespass (one), warrant (one). Nov. 24-Dec. 7, White-Salmon Bingen police charged people with disorderly conduct (one), driving suspended (three), DUII (two), theft (one), warrant (one).
Death — On Victor Road, Wasco County, Dec. 8.
Stats — Wasco County recorded one domestic violence incident; The Dalles police had 12 domestic violence calls, and four assault calls. Hood River responded to one domestic incident.
Mental health calls — Two in Wasco County, one beginning as a welfare check. The Dalles had six mental health calls and a suicide-related call.
Burglars busy — In Wasco, two burglaries were reported on Steele Road on Dec. 7 and Ward Road on Dec. 8. The Dalles also had two burglaries, on Pleasant Court Dec. 6 and E. 12th a day later.
Thefts — Wasco County got two fraud calls and logged a theft on Dry Creek Road. The Dalles had seven theft calls including ID theft, two frauds, and at least two thefts on W. Sixth; both agencies recored illegal use of a vehicle.
Hood River had three shoplifting reports, including a person cited for theft III at Walmart Nov. 30.
Weapons — Dec. 5, incident on Fourth Street, The Dalles.
Computer crime — On Dec. 3, a Newport, Oregon, resident was arrested on charges of computer crime and escape III at Walmart Hood River.
Disorderly charge — Hood River officers were told of a person holding a bat and yelling while hitting objects. They arrested and lodged the transient male in question at NORCOR on a disorderly conduct charge.
Warrant — Hood River officers cited and released a houseless person for a fail to appear warrant out of Hood River County. They also cited the person for unlawful possession of fentanyl.
White Salmon-Bingen — Nov. 24 to Dec. 7, police got three theft reports including a stolen vehicle in White Salmon; talked to someone who wished to speak regarding drug use; logged a non-injury crash in White Salmon Nov. 29 and vandalism at Bingen park Dec. 4; and helped another agency find a missing person in White Salmon on Dec. 2. Also, three animal calls: a noise complaint, off-leash dog, injured raccoon which officers killed.
Week of Nov 28 to Dec. 5:
Sex crimes — Two people were charged by OSP with failure to report as sex offenders on time, one while attempting to complete registration in The Dalles and one in a traffic stop.
Hit-and-run crash — A black Honda hit the guardrail, then crossed both lanes and the central median on I-84 in Wasco County, milepost 70 eastbound, on Nov. 30. Troopers found the vehicle empty, with a puddle of blood, showing an injured driver had left. A search of the area and calls to local hospitals failed to locate them. Vehicle towed.
Other crashes — A single vehicle rolled into the ditch and earth sidewall on State Route 282 in Odell on Nov. 29, blocking that highway. The driver was warned, and the vehicle towed.
Separately on Dec. 3, a single car left its lane on Highway 26 in Maupin and crashed. The unresponsive driver was pronounced dead before reaching the hospital; medics believed they suffered a fatal medical event before crashing.
Wasco reported three crashes, The Dalles reported six (including two on W. Sixth, and two on E. 10th), plus a Nov. 26 pursuit on Dry Hollow and two illegal uses of vehicles. Hood River reported three crashes, one with injuries.
Weapons — A state trooper stopped a car for failing to obey “multiple” traffic control devices, found the driver had suspended driving status, no insurance and a felony warrant out of Multnomah County for being a felon in possession of a weapon, and arrested them. Wasco reported a weapons call, The Dalles four including three on W. Fourth Street.
Many DUIIs — A complaint about a blue commercial truck driving recklessly in Gilliam County on I-84 led to OSP stopping and arresting the driver for DUII with a blood alcohol level of 0.20%, reckless driving, and recklessly endangering three passengers.
The Dalles reported three DUII incidents, and Hood River reported four DUII arrests.
Three injury crashes — A single Toyota sedan going too fast for conditions hydroplaned into I-84’s concrete median in Gilliam County Nov. 27. The driver was transported by ambulance for head pain after airbags deployed.
Separately, multiple vehicles crashed on US 197 on Nov. 28 when a sedan, crossing that highway, T-boned a southbound Toyota pickup. Both drivers refused medical attention for suspected minor injuries; the sedan’s driver warned for failure to obey a traffic control device.
A single car on I-84 eastbound, reaching milepost 88 in Wasco County, lost control on ice. The driver was warned for driving too fast and transported for minor injuries.
Duck damage — Nov. 26, OSP fish and wildlife got a call about someone shooting waterfowl in a closed area in Wasco County. The person got cited for harvesting one duck, which was seized for donation to Salvation Army.
DUII crash — State troopers responded to a single Toyota pickup crashed in the left lane of I-84 in Hood River County on Nov. 25, arrested the driver, and seized two vials of blood for drug testing under a warrant. The driver was charged with DUII and reckless driving.
Charges — Nov. 25 to Dec. 5, OSP charged people with DUII (two), fail to report as sex offender (two), reckless driving (two), reckless endangering (one), warrant (one). Nov. 23-29, Hood River charged people with disorderly conduct (one), DUII (four), misrepresentation of age by a minor (one), unlawful possession of false ID (one), reckless endangering (one), theft (three), trespass (three), warrant (four).
Wasco County and The Dalles don’t reveal arrests, but Wasco reported two warrant incidents, one stemming from a Nov. 28 burglary call on Celilo Village Road. The Dalles reported five.
Stats — Wasco County reported a mental health call, two incidents of domestic violence and one of assault. The Dalles police logged three mental health calls, four calls about suicidal people, six logs of domestic violence and an assault. Hood River police took a sex crimes report and charged two people with assault; for one, they responded to a domestic disturbance and arrested the aggressor, and transported them to NORCOR; NORCOR refused to house the suspect because their hand was broken, so officers cited and released the person at a hospital emergency room.
Robbery — A call for suspicious activity ended as a robbery incident on W. Sixth, The Dalles, on Dec. 2. The Dalles police also logged a burglary on W. Sixth Nov. 30.
Drugs — Wasco reported a drug incident on W. 13th Dec. 3. The Dalles added three, two on W. Second.
Thefts — The Dalles reported 12, including two on E. 10th; a stolen vehicle; and ID theft. Hood River reported five: Three shoplifting, tools from a garage, and a person scammed of money by someone impersonating local police. In one of the shoplifting incidents at Safeway, officer arrested a previously-trespassed person for theft III, disorderly conduct and trespass on Nov. 24.
Kids get cited — Hood River police cited two youth for riding e-bikes while under 16 years old. They also cited and released a juvenile for failing to perform duties of a driver, and possessing alcohol, regarding a hit-and-run.
Fight — Hood River officers reported detainment regarding a fight at Whiskey Tango on Nov. 27.
