Two weeks into the 2024 season, the Hood River Valley girls soccer team has already equaled its win total from a year ago.
The Eagles, guided by third-year Coach Leonor Lopez-Agiurre and assistant Coach Gio Magana-Rivera, won their second straight nonleague contest, 8-0, over visiting Class 4A Pendleton (2-2).
“I am super proud of this group of girls because they have been putting in the work at every practice and it has paid off,” said Lopez-Agiurre. “I also have amazing support from my coaching staff.”
Freshman forward Josie Faaborg (two goals, assist) scored the match’s first goal after getting a pass from junior midfielder Yareli Hernandez (goal, two assists) at the four-minute mark. In the 15th minute, freshman forward Lily Clermont made a run through multiple Pendleton defenders and scored an unassisted goal for a 2-0 HRV advantage.
Five minutes later, junior midfielder — and Lily’s sister — Magnolia Clermont was fouled inside the six-yard box, and she scored on a penalty kick. Magnolia scored another goal in the 34th minute on a shot from 15 yards out for a 4-0 lead. Near the end of the first half, senior forward Julia Rowan (assist) sent a pass into the center of the box and junior forward Sienna Millard scored to make it 5-0 at halftime.
Cate Sullivan had an assist to junior midfielder Hazel Haspela, whose goal in the 57th minute made it 6-0. Faaborg scored off an Hernandez assist; and the two teamed up again with eight minutes left when Hernandez scored off of Faaborg’s assist. The Eagles took 33 shots, 13 on goal. Senior goalkeeper Grace Rowan had seven saves. The eight goals were the most in a game for HRV since an 8-1 nonleague road win at North Salem on Aug. 30, 2022.
